If you’ve noticed that your refrigerator is leaking, it is imperative to figure out what is causing the issue and fix it right away.

Many things in your kitchen could cause a leak. The culprit could be your dishwasher, sink, or even your refrigerator. A functioning fridge allows you to store your groceries and keep your leftovers fresh. But when this major household appliance develops a problem, it could lead to other issues, such as leaks, even if it doesn’t have an ice maker or water dispenser. Today, we’re looking at several reasons why your refrigerator is leaking.

4 Reasons Your Refrigerator is Leaking

Blocked Defroster — A blocked defroster is a common cause of fridge leaks and a great place to begin your troubleshooting. When your defroster is blocked, the defrost cycle water may not be able to drain away correctly. This tiny drain opening can easily become blocked by food particles or ice that accumulate during the defrost cycles. As water builds up, it will begin to leak out of your fridge. You can try clearing the drain by pouring some hot water down and using a pipe cleaner to clear away debris that could be clogging the drain.

Improper Water Filter Fit — If the connection between your water filter and water supply isn’t just right, a leak can quickly develop. These leaks can result from a filter that wasn’t properly installed, is the wrong model for your type of fridge, or has aged, and the seals or housing are cracked. To check if the culprit of the leak is your filter, examine the filter and housing assembly for indications of dripping water. Read and follow the instructions found in your owner’s manual to remove and replace the filter using the correct type of filter for your refrigerator.

Poor Ice Maker Connection — Over time, the connection between your ice maker to your water supply line can become loose, the seals can crack, or the connection may not be tight. Each of these problems can result in pooling water around and below your fridge. If the hose is made of plastic, it can crack, kink, or tear, allowing water to leak. Examine the entire length of the water supply line and check for signs of moisture. If the connection is the leak culprit, you’ll probably see dripping water from the line. The connection may need to be tightened or replaced altogether.

Cracked Drain Pan — The pan located at the bottom of your fridge can occasionally develop a crack. While water can accumulate here, it should not ever escape the pan. The water should dry up thanks to the warm air blown by the condenser fan before it becomes concerning. If your defrost drain isn’t the problem, examine the pan for any signs of cracks or other damage.
