3 Common Reasons Why Your Refrigerator Motor Won’t Stop Running and What to Do

There are many different reasons why your fridge motor won’t stop running, but today we’re focusing on three common issues that people run into:

Dirty Condenser Coils

If you’ve had your fridge for more than a few years, the condenser coils have had enough time to get covered in dust, dirt, and other buildup. Most people do a great job keeping the face and inside of their refrigerators looking good, but the back of this appliance is often overlooked. Over time, grease and grime buildup from regular kitchen use can stop the condenser coils from functioning correctly, resulting in your fridge motor running longer than it should.

How to fix it: If dirty condenser coils are the reason why your fridge motor won’t stop running, it’s an easy fix. First, unplug your refrigerator for safety reasons. Then, use your vacuum hose and run it over the coils to suck up any loose dust and debris. Next, if necessary, use a clean, damp cloth to wipe away any remaining buildup. Once the coils are clean, plug in your fridge, and it should be working as it should.

Faulty Defrost Heater

The defrost heater should turn on several times a day to help melt away any accumulated frost or ice on the evaporator coils. When it stops working correctly, frost and ice can build up in your refrigerator and cause the motor to run constantly to defrost it.

How to fix it: Chances are, you’ll need to replace the defrost heater entirely. If your defrost heater stops working, the best thing to do is call a knowledgeable appliance maintenance specialist. You can attempt a DIY job; however, your local appliance repair shop will get the job done effectively and efficiently.

Malfunctioning Defrost Thermostat

The defrost thermostat helps measure the temperature of the coils. When the coils are too cold, the thermostat will signal the defrost heater to turn on and warm up the coils. Ice can build up on the coils if it isn’t doing its job and cause the fridge to constantly run since it’s not receiving a signal that it’s at the correct temperature.

How to fix it: The defrost thermostat replacing process is different from one brand to the next. If you’re not up for the task, call an experienced appliance repair service to do the job and get your refrigerator back up and running as it should.
