5 Expert Tips for Installing Appliances

  1. Measure Twice — It is always a good idea to measure twice, even when you’re buying and installing your household appliances. Before making your purchases, make sure you measure the space where your machine is going. Some appliances come in “standard” sizes; even so, it’s wise to measure the area, so you know you are buying the correct size appliance. Moreover, you will want to make sure the machines you’re buying will fit through your doors, hallways, stairwells, etc.
  2. Protect Your Floors — Metal wheels of refrigerators, ranges, and other appliances can wreak havoc on even the toughest flooring materials. Do yourself a favor and lay down 1/8 inch hardboard, a piece of leftover carpet, or super stiff cardboard to protect your floors when installing your appliances.
  3. Move With Your Hands — When installing your appliances, a natural inclination for do-it-yourselfers is to use your knee to push the machines into place. This is both an effective way to move appliances and dent them. Keep your surfaces smooth and scratch-free by strictly using your hands and taking off rings and other jewelry before moving anything to avoid.
  4. Use Burst-Free Hoses — Your appliances may come with low-quality rubber hoses or without anything at all. Either way, it’s best to purchase “no-burst” hoses that have a braided stainless steel cover since burst washing machine hoses are one of the leading sources of water damage. Your homeowners’ insurance might even give you a discount for swapping.
  5. Check for Leaks — If you are an appliance installation novice, it’s best to check your work an hour or so after you have completed the job — especially if the appliance uses water. Wipe up any spills that occurred during the installation, run a cycle (if you can), and give the appliance time to see if it will leak. If you don’t feel 100% confident about installing your appliances, call a professional to do the job.
